The most commonly flooded room in a home? The bathroom! The bathroom has the most water flowing through it, and the rust, loose connections, and damaged pipes and fittings, all make the bathroom likely to flood.
Shower and Tub Drains
There are a few things you can do to help prevent the dreaded bathroom flood in the first place. Keeping shower/tub drains clear and preventing blockages is a great start. Hair and soap are your drainpipes biggest enemies, and while you can’t avoid some of it making it down the drain, what you can do is place affordable drain shields that can filter and catch some hair and soap scum. Wipe your tubs and showers out from time to time and clean out your drains with drain cleaner. This all will help prevent backups and blockages leading to a flooded bathroom.
Another drain that should be watched is the toilet drain. No one likes to clean up a toilet blockage but watching how much extra material is flushed will keep the pipes clear. Never flush down paper towels or large amounts of paper. Sanitary wipes and other products should never be flushed. Keep an eye on small children who love to flush things that don’t belong in the toilet. If your water looks too low or too high, there may be a drainage problem somewhere in the line, and you should call a professional.
Keep an eye on your home as dripping sounds, musty smells, rust, discolored floors and ceilings, and water stains are all signs of water damage. Over time, pipes age and can become damaged or leaky. Finding these problems early on will save your home and your wallet!
Whether the problem is in your bathroom, or any room in your home, keeping regular maintenance will help reduce your chances of water and plumbing problems. Schedule an inspection or consult a professional if you ever question the plumbing in your home!
